How the AO 2024 men's final was decided in Sinner v. Medvedev

Growing in strength, Jannik Sinner overcame an early onslaught to defeat Daniil Medvedev and won his maiden Grand Slam singles championship in the Australian Open 2024 final.

The AO 2024 men's final was unique since both players finished it with the same strength, speed, and confidence.

Medvedev, who is renowned for his ability to extend rallies and counterpunch in addition to his powerful engine, shocked everyone by opening the Sunday night final in an unexpected way.

He pushed up and purposefully met Sinner's serve rather than returning it far behind the baseline. 

He swept through service games without encountering a single break point, winning 84% of those points and landing 86% of his opening serves.

The change

However, by this time, Medvedev's game was beginning to lose its sting.

At the beginning of the second set, Medvedev was serving 77 percent of the first serves for the match on average; at the finish, however, this percentage had dropped to 65. When he restricted those numbers to the second set only, he was only able to land 50%. 

Despite being broken for the first time in the seventh game, Medvedev was still able to secure a two-set lead.

The lengthy Grand Slam tennis match

What was happening now was explained by what had come before.

In his last six rounds, Medvedev had been on the court for over 20 hours, which was nearly two more matches than Sinner (who had advanced to the final in less than 15 hours).

In an attempt to limit the number of points, Medvedev may have come out so forcefully in the opening set.

After the three hours and forty-four-minute battle, Sinner pulled off an incredible comeback to win.

Sinner, ranked fourth, scored his first Grand Slam victory.

During the event, third-seeded Medvedev played for over twenty-four hours in an attempt to win a second Grand Slam championship.
